How to dub a video into another language with AI (step by step)

To dub a video with AI, open wawie's dubbing tool, upload your video and choose the source and target languages. Keep the original speaker's voice, with their consent, or pick a voice from the library. wawie transcribes, translates and re-voices the speech on the original timing, then puts the new audio under your picture so you can download an MP4.

AI dubbing replaces the speech in a video with a translated version spoken by an AI voice. In wawie the whole chain runs in one tool: the audio is extracted, transcribed, translated, voiced in the target language and placed back under the original picture. You can dub into 24+ target languages, and with voice cloning the speaker can keep their own voice. Start with a short clip to judge the result before you dub a long video.

What you need

How do you dub a video with AI, step by step?

  1. Create a free wawie account: Sign up in your browser, with nothing to install and no card needed. The free plan includes 5,000 one-time credits, enough to test a short clip. Dubbing is billed on the length of the media, and the exact cost appears before you launch anything.
  2. Open the dubbing tool: From the side menu of the dashboard, open the dubbing tool. It needs one file and three choices: the language spoken in the video, the language you want, and whose voice should speak the translation. Every choice can be changed until you launch the dub.
  3. Upload your video or audio file: Drop the file into the upload area. Video in MP4, MOV, WEBM, MKV or AVI works, as does audio in MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC or OGG. For a video, wawie extracts the soundtrack for dubbing and keeps the picture aside for the final assembly.
  4. Set the source and target languages: Leave the source language on automatic detection, or set it yourself if you know it. Then choose the target language from the list, for example Spanish, German or Japanese. If several people speak in the video, you can also enter the number of speakers.
  5. Choose whose voice speaks the dub: By default, wawie keeps the original voices by cloning them, so each speaker still sounds like themselves in the new language. Use this only for your own voice or with the speaker's consent. Otherwise, pick one voice from the library to speak for every speaker.
  6. Launch the dub and follow progress: Start the dub and follow the progress bar through each stage: audio extraction, transcription, translation, voice synthesis and reassembly. A short clip is usually ready within a few minutes, and longer videos take proportionally longer. The dubbed audio plays in the player as soon as it is ready.
  7. Preview and download the dubbed video: When the dub is ready, wawie merges the new audio under your original video, right in the browser. Preview the result, then download it as an MP4. If you only need the soundtrack, for a podcast or another editor, download the dubbed audio from the player instead.
  8. Fine-tune the dub in the studio: For more control, bring the video into the studio, wawie's online editor. Its dubbing option lays every translated line on a dub track at the moment the original was spoken, so you can move or trim any line, add translated subtitles, and export a final MP4.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to dub a video with AI?

Setting up a dub takes a minute or two: upload the file, pick the languages and choose the voice. Processing then runs through extraction, transcription, translation, voice synthesis and reassembly, and its duration grows with the length of the video. A short clip is usually ready within a few minutes, and the progress bar shows which stage is running.

Can I keep my own voice when I dub a video?

Yes. wawie can clone the original voices during the dub, so the speaker still sounds like themselves in the target language, and this option is on by default. Use it for your own voice, or for someone else's only with their explicit consent. If you prefer a different voice, choose one from the voice library and it will speak for every speaker.

Which languages can I dub a video into?

wawie supports 24+ target languages for dubbing, including English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Arabic, Hindi, Japanese and Chinese. The source language can be detected automatically, so you do not need to set it for most videos. The language list in the dubbing tool always shows the options available at that moment.

Will the speaker's lips match the new language?

wawie does not alter the picture, so mouth movements are not re-animated. Instead, the translation is fitted to the length of each original line and spoken on the original timing, so the new speech starts and ends where the original did. For talking-head videos, tutorials, courses and marketing content, that keeps the dub easy to follow.

How much does it cost to dub a video?

Dubbing is billed in credits based on the length of the media, and the exact cost is shown before you launch. The free plan includes 5,000 one-time credits with no card, enough to test a short clip. Paid plans start with Wawie Start at EUR 4.99 a month for 180,000 credits, and every paid plan covers the other wawie tools too.
