The montage studio
The studio is a full video editor in the browser: multitrack timeline, monitor, inspector and library. This guide covers every tool, from importing media to exporting the MP4.

The interface
The studio is laid out in four zones: the library on the left, the monitor in the centre, the inspector on the right and the timeline along the bottom. The library and the inspector fold away entirely to give the picture the whole screen.
- Three interface levels, simple, standard, expert, hide or reveal tools to match your comfort.
- The command palette (Ctrl+K) finds any action from the keyboard.
- The Settings dialog tunes the interface, the timeline, playback, subtitles and shortcuts.
Media and library
The Media tab takes your files by drag and drop, with a progress bar per file; the upload to the cloud continues in the background while you edit.
Smart folders
- Every generated media file arrives already filed: voices, beats, music, dubs, videos, images, sounds.
- The "Sort automatically" button files the rest; manual filing is never overridden.
The built-in libraries
- Ready-to-use music and sound effects, with categories, search and favourites.
- Stickers, GIFs and custom fonts, managed by the platform.
- The Drive tab reaches your whole account library without leaving the edit.
- The wand on a card sends the file itself to be enhanced: noise, sharpness, stabilisation, upscaling. See “Improving the picture”.
The timeline
The timeline is multitrack and runs itself: drop a media file above or below the existing tracks and a track is created; empty it and it disappears.
- Tracks sort by family, visual on top, audio below, and gather into named, collapsible groups.
- The zoom runs from the whole project down to a single frame; snapping aligns clips with each other and with markers.
- Selection works by click, by rectangle or by adding; a whole selection moves as one block.
- Beat markers, detected on the music, allow editing cut to the rhythm.
- Double-click a clip to select its whole track, pieces included, then drag any of them to shift everything as one block; the context menu also offers "from here to the end".
Automatic closing of gaps between clips is switched on in the timeline settings.
Editing
The basic moves are those of classic editing software: cut at the playhead, trim by the edges, move, duplicate, set the speed.
- A video clip split into picture and sound merges back into a single element.
- A clip's effects copy and paste onto another.
- The undo history covers every move: Ctrl+Z steps back as many times as needed.
- The preview quality button (LQ / MQ / HQ) lightens playback while editing without changing the export at all.
The monitor
The monitor shows the scene as it will export. Select an element to get its frame: scale handles, rotation, movement.
- Every media file fits the scene as "contain", "fill" or smart fit; corners can be rounded whatever the framing.
- The anchor point tool moves the origin of rotations and scaling: drag the crosshair over the picture, it snaps to the centre and the edges; a double click recentres it.
- A blurred background can fill the empty bands, it is never applied on its own.
- Fullscreen always switches to high quality.
- The before / after button opens a sliding wipe between the original picture and the treated one, during playback too.
Text and subtitles
The Text tab covers titles and subtitles. Automatic subtitles rest on AI transcription: the edit's audio is extracted, transcribed, then cut into lines synchronised to the word.
- 24 ready-made subtitle styles, each animated and fully editable.
- Per-word animations, karaoke, reveal, bounce…, drop onto any text.
- Bulk editing sets the font, size or position of every subtitle at once.
- Your settings save as reusable personal styles, and the platform's fonts join them.
- The pre-export check finds subtitles that read too fast; one button stretches them into the silence that follows, without ever moving a line's start.
Animations and keyframes
The Animations tab gathers motion presets, text animations and easing curves, with search and category filters.
- 22 presets, ins, outs, moves, accents, drop straight onto a clip; the drop point decides where the animation lands.
- Every property can also be keyframed: the diamonds appear in the timeline, move, and delete with a right click.
- The ideal spacing button re-paces a clip's keyframes to a natural rhythm.
- Easing curves (ease in, ease out, bounce…) apply by drag and drop and preview in the gallery.
Effects, filters and transitions
Visual effects, colour filters and transitions each have their gallery, with an animated preview tile.
- A clip's effect chain is visible and reorderable in the inspector.
- Green screen (chroma key) cuts out a coloured background with fine controls; automatic background removal does it without one.
- Adjustment layers apply filters and effects to everything beneath them.
- Cinema grading adds five complete looks (Teal & Orange, Golden hour, Blue steel, Bleach bypass, Film noir) built on real per-channel curves, which is what allows cool shadows under warm highlights.
- A look you have dialled in saves under a name: unfold “My filters”, the first group in the panel, where the field and the button live. The filter is kept on your account and comes back in every other project : applied with a click, by dragging it onto a clip, or as an adjustment layer.
- A personal filter keeps the colour only (base look, brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, temperature, blur, vignette, grain), never the framing or the animations: it has to sit as well on a wide shot as on a close-up.
Improving the picture
Two tools share almost the same name and do different work. Smart enhancement corrects how a clip looks in the edit: free, instant, reversible. File enhancement treats the file itself, frame by frame, on our servers, and hands back a new piece of media.
Smart enhancement, in the inspector
- One frame of each selected clip is actually measured, its faults are named (milky blacks, crushed contrast, a warm cast, noise, softness), and the correction is written into the sliders, where you can change it or undo it.
- The Strength slider governs the whole verdict: 0 leaves the picture untouched, 100 applies all of it.
- The Noise reduction and Sharpness sliders can also be set by hand, and they go into the export.
A clip whose frame could not be read is reported and left alone: no correction is invented.
Enhancing a file, on our servers
- Hover a card in the Media panel (a file already on your drive), and click the wand.
- What you can set: noise and grain, banding and blocking, sharpness, stabilisation, brightness, contrast, saturation, upscaling to 8K and smoothness up to 120 frames per second. Four presets give you a starting point: Clean up, Restore, Sharpen, Stabilise.
- The processing time is quoted before you start, as a multiple of the file's own length.
- The queue is visible in the same window, with a bar per file and a stop button; it keeps going even if you reload the page.
- The result arrives as a new file on your drive: the original is never changed, and Add to media brings it into the open project.
An upscale to a size the file already exceeds is not offered, and a frame rate below its own is ignored: either one would be an hour of processing for nothing.
Several files at once
- Tick several files to run the same settings over all of them. The settings are recomputed per file: asking for 4K across a batch upscales the 1080p rushes and leaves a 4K master alone.
- Three files are treated at a time at most; the rest go out as slots free up, as long as the window stays open.
Before / after
- The columns button in the transport bar opens a wipe across the monitor: the original picture on the left, everything the clip carries on the right. Drag the handle, or move it with the arrow keys.
- The grade and the enhancement come off on the left; the green-screen key stays on both sides, because it makes the shot rather than treating it.
The comparison exists only in the monitor: it never appears in an exported file.
Audio tools
Everything the dashboard generates can also be created without leaving the edit: an AI voice generates in place, in its own dialog.
- The Beat Studio composes beats: patterns, instruments, AI generation by style.
- The Music Lab generates music as five separate stems, drums, bass, chords, melody, vocals, dropped straight into the timeline.
- Waveforms show what you hear; automatic ducking lowers the music under the voice.
- The voice tools clean up a recording: noise reduction, voice isolation, modulation.
- An audio track's menu can merge it: pieces that follow each other are joined with no render, otherwise the whole track becomes a single clip dropped into Media.
Audio visualizers
An audio visualizer is a clip that draws another clip's sound: bars, mirror, wave, oscilloscope, line, circle, dots, pulse, peaks, nine styles synchronised to the frame.
- Drag a style from the gallery onto a clip that carries sound: the visualizer attaches to it and follows it, even moved, trimmed or sped up.
- The inspector sets the style, the target, the gradient colours, the band count and the sensitivity.
The drawing rests on Remotion's audio analysis: the preview and the export trace exactly the same thing.
Parenting and attachments
One clip can follow another, position, rotation, scale. That is parenting, After Effects style.
- Pull the attachment dot of a selected clip onto another clip in the timeline: a connection line draws, and the attachment is made on release.
- Alt+click on the dot detaches the clip; the selected family's links stay visible.
- Control layers animate a whole set of clips with a single movement.
Exporting
Export opens from the top bar. Two paths lead to the final file: rendering on our servers, and local export in your browser.
Server render
- The project joins the render queue; progress shows live and the MP4 lands in your Drive.
Browser export
- The edit is replayed and captured in place: pick the export tab it offers, and keep it visible during the capture.
- If the capture targets the wrong surface or comes back black, the export stops with a clear message rather than delivering an empty file.
- A recording produced as WebM is converted to MP4 automatically.
Quality control
- Before exporting, the studio flags black gaps, subtitles that read too fast, a mix that is too loud, or an unknown font.
- Subtitles that read too fast are fixed with one click from that same check, and all of it comes back in a single undo.
Keyboard shortcuts
The keyboard does half the editing. The essentials:
- Space: play / pause.
- Ctrl+K: command palette.
- Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Shift+Z: undo / redo.
- The full list can be read and changed in Settings → Shortcuts.
Performance
A large project stays smooth when the preview works less:
- Lower the preview quality (LQ or MQ) while editing; the export stays at full quality.
- Drive media is cached locally: reopening a project is near-instant.
- Fold the library and the inspector away to enlarge the monitor and the timeline.
